February 21, 2013
Carroll Mayor Adam Schweers is serving as president in 2013 of YP Iowa, a statewide organization of young professionals that continues to add more members.
Young Professionals of Iowa, an umbrella organization for more than 60 regional and city-based young-professional groups, elected officers at a recent meeting in Des Moines. Schweers, 34, started duties as president Jan. 1.
The organization is gearing up for one of its major events of the year - YP Iowa Day at the Capitol on March 13, when members lobby legislators about issues of importance to younger professionals.
Generally speaking, young professional organizations in Iowa involve those ages 21 to 40. The Carroll Area Connect Young Professionals accepts members up to age 45.
The Carroll organization has 140 members.
"We're one of the largest in the state," Schweers said. "We've actually built a heck of a group here through the years."
Carroll has been a leader is mentoring young professionals from other communities, Schweers said.
YP Iowa is developing resource guides to help more communities launch organizations and creating speaker lists to make sessions more motivating for members, Schweers said.
Schweers, a founding member of the Carroll organization, said YP groups play an important role in the commercial and cultural lives of communities.
"Right now, I think we're welcoming young people back into our communities," Schweers said.
He said the members involved with YP are likely to play leadership roles in communities.
