Sonia Walsh, a Carroll educator and actor with a resume of commercial and dramatic work, has announced plans to open a private acting studio for children and adults.

Classes will start in September at Serendipity Acting Studio, which will be located on the west side of the Carroll Depot Business Center in about 2,000 square feet of remodeled space.

Walsh, 42, a substitute teacher at Carroll High School and Carroll Middle School, said she will begin regular hours in the studio, located just to the south of the Spring Valley Verizon store, in July. The studio will be clearly marked with signs.

"There's not something like this for a student who is more dramatically inclined," Walsh said.

Walsh said classes will be available for children in prekindergarten as well as adults.

"Everything will be age-appropriate," Walsh said.

Walsh and her husband, Chuck, have four children: Hastings, 18, a Carroll High School senior who will be attending the University of Northern Iowa; Zach, 15, a freshman at Carroll High School; Sammie, 11, a sixth-grader; and Emersyn, 10, a fourth-grader.

Information on classes at the acting studio can be found on the facility's website - www.serendipity-studio.net.

Walsh said the studio will be able to accommodate up to 190 students. She expects a strong regional draw.

"I really just think kids need an outlet to be creative," Walsh said.

Walsh said the studio will allow students to improve communication skills. What's more, highly talented students will have opportunities to pursue professional work through Walsh's connections in the industry, whether more locally in Des Moines and Omaha, Nebraska, or on the coasts.
