The family of Sheryl Stoolman and the St. Anthony Foundation have established a memorial scholarship for students pursuing healthcare careers.
Stoolman, a longtime emergency-room nurse at St. Anthony Regional Hospital and emergency medical technician for Carroll County Ambulance Service, died May 13 in a collision at Beaver while transporting a critically ill patient.
Under the Sheryl M. Venner Stoolman Scholarship program, the hospital foundation will accept tax-deductible donations and Stoolman’s family will oversee the scholarship awards.
Scholarships will be awarded to students working toward nursing degrees, emergency medical services certification or healthcare careers at the hospital.
Applications will be available in January, with scholarships awarded in the spring.
Stoolman, a daughter of Cyril and Anita (Bruch) Venner, earned an LPN degree at St. Anthony School of Nursing and an RN degree at Des Moines Area Community College. She was an ER nurse for 26 years, taught nursing at DMACC, was a member of the Emergency Nurses Association of Iowa and the Iowa Trauma Association, and in 2007 was named a Hospital Hero by the Iowa Hospital Association.
“We received many donations in Sheryl’s memory from the community following the accident,” said Stoolman’s husband Dan. “Partnering with St. Anthony allows our family to stay involved in the scholarship decisions while giving donors the advantage of making tax-free donations.”
Contributions to the scholarship fund can be mailed to St. Anthony Foundation, Box 628, Carroll 51401. Donations are also being accepted at United Bank of Iowa in Carroll.
