Sgt. Adrian Edward Hike was killed Monday, Nov. 12, 2007, in combat in Afghanistan.
Mass of the Christian burial will be at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 24, at Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Carroll with the Rev. James McCormick presiding.
Casket bearers will be Sgt. Christopher Winburn, Sgt. Jeffery Hodge, Staff Sgt. Andrew Larson, Sgt. Stephen Gauthier, Sgt. Christopher Matz and Staff Sgt. Robert Connelly. Honorary casket bearers will be Sgt. Hike's 22 cousins.
Visitation starts at 9 a.m. Friday at Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home in Carroll. Holy Spirit Parish will hold a Christian wake service at 7 Friday night at the funeral home. Visitation will resume at 8 a.m. Saturday at the church.
Burial with military honors will be in Carroll Cemetery.

He was born July 21, 1981, at Carroll and attended schools at Odebolt, Lake View, Wall Lake and Sac City. He graduated from Sac Community High School a Sac City in 2000.
After enlisting in the Army in 2002 he completed cavalry scout training at Fort Knox, Ky. His duty station was Schweinfurt, Germany.
In February 2005 he was deployed to Iraq, where he served for a year and received a Purple Heart due to injuries. In 2006 he attended airborne and paratrooper training for eight weeks at Fort Benning, Ga. He was deployed to Afghanistan in June 2007.
Sgt. Hike lived a theme of selfless service that started long before his military career. He gave up his own security to keep his family together and never shared experiences with his mom he thought would give her nightmares. His military career shed him of childish habits and crafted him into a true hero. That is how he will be remembered.
Survivors include his parents, Robert Bird of Odebolt and Kim Bird of Ralston; four brothers: Robert Jr. of Odebolt, Martin and wife Jill of Harcourt, Jonathon of Fort Dodge and Aaron of Rinard; his grandmothers: Delores Bird, of Odebolt and Patricia Stout of Ralston and special friend William Schneider; his great-grandmother, Daisy Hyland, of Lake City; uncles: Kevin Hike and wife Mary of Lake City, Charles and Andy Bird of Odebolt, Kenny Hike and friend Karen Stewart of Des Moines and Bill Bird and wife Denise of Newell; aunts: Kathryn Edwards and husband Craig of Carroll, Karla Fisher and husband Scott of Jane, Mo., Cecilia Mathias and husband Jerry of Deloit, Shirley Trulsen and husband Bruce of Carroll, Linda Fagan and husband Tim of Lanesboro, Karen Peterson and husband Richard of Ida Grove and Janet Johnson of Ozark, Mo.
Sgt. Hike was preceded in death by an aunt, Karen Kay; his grandfathers: William Bird of Odebolt, Raymond Hike of Effingham, Ill., and Ferman Stout of Ralston; and his great-grandparents: Lloyd Hyland of Lake City and Kenneth and Frieda Hike of Carroll.
