School's nearly out on fall show

A sugar maple tree just outside the front door of the Carroll County Historical Society’s country schoolhouse in Graham Park recently reached its peak fall color. However, temperatures apparently turned too cold too soon and spoiled chances for a fabulous fall foliage show. The Iowa Department of Natural Resources website notes freezing weather has hastened leaf drop, and peak color in west-central Iowa occurred in mid-October. The Maple River Township Center Schoolhouse (above) was built in 1871 and moved to Graham Park in 1965.
