2 SCC performers awarded I ratings

LAKE CITY: Two South Central Calhoun performers received straight-I (excellent) ratings in an Iowa High School Speech Association State Individual Events Contest.

All-state results will be posted on the IHSSA website on Wednesday afternoon, March 24. Performers who received I rating plus judges’ nomination will be named all-state. Due to the coronavirus pandemic, the traditional All-State Festival at the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls will not be held this year.

Following are South Central Calhoun’s State results:

Nik Whipkey (sophomore), improvisation, characters were grandmother and taco maker, situation was appearing on a late-night talk show. Received straight Is rating.

Maggie Simpson (senior), improvisation, characters were psychic and phantom, situation was stuck in gum in a movie theater. Received straight Is rating.

Tristan Blair (freshman), storytelling, “Where the Wild Things Are” by Maurice Sendak. Received a II (good) rating.

This was the first year all three students participated in individual speech.
