Carroll Schools prepare for virtual snow days to quell cancellations

  • 0

The Carroll Community School District has outlined plans for virtual snow days to avoid further school cancellations due to weather for the rest of the year.

When school officials learn that a snow day might be needed, the district will implement a virtual school day rather than completely canceling school, according to a letter sent to parents by the school district.

“We have missed five days of school so far this year due to weather and we are hopeful that we will not have any more missed days due to weather,” the letter states.

The district would notify families when a virtual day was planned. The guidelines for the virtual days are as follows, according to the letter.

— Teachers will assign students meaningful activities that require them to respond or produce an artifact and students will turn in the artifact either digitally or physically. From 7:45 to 9:30 a.m., teachers will prepare and record lessons to post on Google Classroom.

— Teachers will have explained learning expectations to their students in order to prepare them for this digital snow day.

— All work/activities assigned are required and are due (physically or digitally) no later than the beginning of the next time the class meets.

“We realize some students may not have adequate access to technology, may be responsible for taking care of young siblings, etc., and thus not able to do their schoolwork immediately,” the letter states. “If there are complications to completing this work, please contact your teacher.”

On those days, teachers will be available by email at least from 9:30 to 11 a.m. and from 1 to 3:30 p.m., according to the letter.

“There is no expectation for synchronous (live) digital instruction by the teacher nor will teachers require synchronous attendance by the student,” the letter states.

However, teachers would have the option of offering live Zoom or Google Meets sessions to provide support to students if needed. Attendance would be based on the completion of the assigned activity in each class.

The district has created the following schedules based on grades.

5-12 schedule:

7:45-9:30: Teachers will prepare and post required work for the day

9:30-11: Instructional support hours

11-12: PLC meeting time

12-1: Lunch

1:00-3:30: Instructional support hours

PK-4 schedule:

7:45-9:30: Teachers work within PLCs

9:30-11: Instructional support hours

11-12 PLC meeting time

12-1: Lunch

1-3:30: Instructional support hours

Those with questions can contact their children’s principal.
