Two inmates of the jail in Sac City escaped this afternoon after they overpowered a jailer, according to Sac County Sheriff Ken McClure.
McClure identified the men as Shawn Patrick Freier, 25, of Lake View, and Joseph Lee Sly, 35, of Rockwell City.
They escaped about 4:25 p.m. and ran south from the jail.
"Both men should be considered dangerous," McClure said. "Call 911 if you see either of these men."
Freier was sentenced last month to up to five months in jail after he pleaded guilty to felony domestic abuse assault and criminal mischief and misdemeanor assault, according to court records. He was accused of punching a woman in the throat several times and choking her and damaging a vehicle.
He also received two five-year suspended prison sentences that could be imposed for further criminal offenses, such as escaping from a jail.
Sly was in jail awaiting his sexual abuse trial in January, court records show. He faces four felony charges for abusing a child younger than 12 years old in 2017 and 2018. Two of the charges are punishable by up to 25 years in prison apiece.
Sly had been held in jail for nearly a year.
