Espresso machine might have ignited apartment fire

A Saturday morning fire that destroyed a Carroll apartment's kitchen and caused significant smoke damage elsewhere might have been ignited by an espresso and cappuccino machine, according to Fire Chief Greg Schreck.

The fire was reported about 9:10 a.m. at 1921 North Randall Road — which is northwest of Fairview Elementary School — where smoke had seeped into a second-floor hallway of the apartment building.

Firefighters found the fire in an unoccupied apartment and quickly extinguished it and ventilated the building to rid it of smoke.

The tenant of the apartment was at work at the time of the fire, and no one was injured.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation but appears to have begun in the area of the coffee maker.
