Derek Schwartz always knew he would one day open his own dental hygiene practice.
The question was, when?
But he hadn’t even finished school when he discovered Manning. It was the perfect place. He could build his own facility while giving the city something it also needed.
“Having my own practice was always a goal of mine when I started dental school,” Schwartz said. “I didn’t expect it to happen right away, but we got to pick how we wanted to do it and the design of it. I am really excited about raising this practice into what we want it to be. I am really excited to be in Manning and building some roots and becoming part of the community.”
Schwartz, 27, who opened his practice, Manning Dental, Aug. 19, said everything has been going well so far. He is excited to better get to know his patients as well as the Manning community.
“So far everything has been great,” he said. “With a new office, (you’re) just getting your feet underneath you and getting a feel for the flow of things, but so far everything has been going really smoothly. We’ve been having good experiences with our patients. We are optimistic about the future and getting things going.”
After graduating from dental school at the University of Iowa in May, Schwartz and his wife, Sadie, moved to Templeton. They both are originally from Harlan and thought getting back to their rural, small-town roots would be the perfect fit, Schwartz said.
“Manning seems like a really good fit for us, and we really like the feedback we’ve gotten from the community,” he said.
Schwartz said he was ready to be back in a small-town setting but also liked the idea of giving back to the community. His practice could provide a needed business in Manning, he said.
“I think people are having to travel 25 or so miles to find care,” he said. “Filling that small gap here is big, and I think people here are real supportive of the community, and I think they have a lot of pride in the community.”
