A 59-year-old Carroll man who was arrested Wednesday for public intoxication is accused of assaulting a fellow inmate at the Carroll County jail not long after his arrest, according to court records.
Officers found Brian James Origer asleep in an alleyway about 8:40 p.m. near U.S. Highway 30 between Clark and Court streets. Origer smelled of alcohol, had trouble talking and standing and appeared to have urinated in his clothes, according to a criminal complaint.
He told an officer he had been drinking at a bar.
At about 11 p.m. after Origer had been taken to jail, he arose from his sleeping mat and punched an inmate with whom he shared a cell “without reason,” court records show. Origer knocked the man to the ground and continued to punch him in the back and side. The other man had also been arrested that night for public intoxication.
A police officer did not test Origer’s breath to determine his blood-alcohol concentration because he was uncooperative, Police Chief Brad Burke said.
Origer is charged with public intoxication and assault, both of which are misdemeanors punishable by up to 30 days in jail.
