A 34-year-old rural Carroll woman was severely injured early Tuesday morning when she was struck by a pickup truck on a gravel road as she walked a dog, according to a sheriff's report.
Sonya May Smires was in the middle of the road with the dog about 1:45 a.m. near the intersection of 110th Street and Noble Avenue — about 7 miles north of Carroll — when she was struck by a truck driven by Lonnie John Kastle, 49, who lives with her nearby and had gone out to find her.
Kastle was westbound on 110th Street when his truck approached Smires, who was wearing dark clothing. He tried to brake but struck her, according to the report. Kastle told investigators that he jumped from the truck but left its manual transmission in neutral, and the truck rolled backward into a ditch.
Smires was taken to St. Anthony Regional Hospital by ambulance with unspecified injuries. She was expected to survive.
Kastle was not cited for a traffic violation. Investigators determined he was not intoxicated at the time of the crash.
