SAC COUNTY: A little more than 40 minutes from Carroll are the shops, restaurants and homes of communities in Sac County, which was just voted as Carroll’s best neighboring county in the Times Herald Best of Carroll County Readers’ Choice Awards.
Sac County has a population of just under 10 thousand, as of 2018. The county has multiple small communities; two of its largest are Sac City and Lake View.
One of the big attractions in Sac County is Black Hawk Lake in Lake View. It’s a destination for swimming, boating and camping, and some lake homes are situated nearby.
While Black Hawk Lake sees about 250,000 annual visitors, according to lakeviewlifestyle.com, there are other things to do and places to go for those not too interested in water.
The 33-mile long Sauk Rail Trail for walking and biking is available for recreational use and events like the annual “Ride the Rail” ride.
The trail also physically connects the city to Carroll and “countryside communities” of Lake View, Breda, Carnarvon and Maple River, and also reaches Carroll’s Swan Lake State Park.
Lake View has multiple restaurants to choose from with various hours to accommodate for different crowds. Some of the places to eat are The Bar in Lake View, Thirsty Carp and Kathy’s Korner.
Places to shop in Lake View include Black Bison Outfitters/ArtworX, Day Dreamers and the farmers market on Saturdays. While walking the streets of Lake View or at the lake, people offer friendly smiles and wave.
Sac City also has its own unique attractions and amenities for families, friends and individuals.
It is home to the world’s largest popcorn ball, which is near the Sac City Museum. The city has an aquatic center next to a playground featuring tennis courts, a basketball court and sand volleyball.
The Sac Community Center offers activities and a place where residents and visitors can socialize. The center is in the old elementary school building and has a full-size gym, exercise equipment and meeting rooms, and features the first indoor school pool in Iowa.
Counties can interact with each other in various ways. They may join together for events, like those on recreational trails, and people may work in other counties for jobs like construction.
Since Sac County is less than an hour away, Carroll County residents regularly drive for a change in scenery and to explore the shops and restaurants local to the neighboring county.
