Segebart says King ‘picked on’ for truth telling

State senator endorses congressman’s re-election bid

State Sen. Mark Segebart, a Vail Republican who represents five of the 39 counties in Iowa’s 4th Congressional District, told the Times Herald Saturday he plans to formally endorse U.S. Rep. Steve King, R-Kiron, in a competitive GOP primary slated for June.

“I think he’s able to speak truth to power better than anybody currently in the U.S. Congress, and for that reason, he’s picked on a lot,” Segebart said in an interview following a Carroll Chamber of Commerce legislative forum Saturday. “I think he’s the best one to speak truth to power.”

House leadership stripped King of his assignments on the agriculture, small business and judiciary committees over concerns they have with what they see as racially insensitive remarks from King.

Segebart said he expects a re-election of King will force top House Republicans in Washington, D.C. to reconsider that move and seat King on committees again.

King is being challenged in the Republican 4th District primary by State Sen. Randy Feenstra of Hull, Jeremy Taylor of Sioux City, Bret Richards, the former mayor of Irwin, and Arnolds Park businessman Steve Reeder.

I met them all,” Segebart said. “You know what, take Steve out of the race, they’re all good candidates. They’ve all got the right conservative principles that we do, but in this case, I’ve known Steve King all my life.”
