ON WAY TO CALIFORNIA: A young Chicago couple, toting 46- and 26-lb. backpacks, paused Monday afternoon in Carroll on the second day of a hitchhiking trip to California. Freelance photographer Jim Holland, and his wife Debbie, who is a reporter for the Associated Press in Chicago, carry with them such necessities as a tent, sleeping bags, stove and cameras. They hope to make it to the West Coast before their three-week vacation is over.
