A horse died Wednesday morning and another was injured when they were struck by a sport-utility vehicle on a winding road just north of Coon Rapids, according to a crash report.

Ashley Fawn-Marie Scanlon, 31, of Perry, was northbound on Velvet Avenue about 5 a.m. when she encountered a group of horses in the roadway.

Scanlon's 2005 Mercury Mountaineer struck two of the horses. One died and the other suffered unspecified injuries. Scanlon was not hurt.

The vehicle had to be towed from the crash site and had an estimated $3,500 of damage.

The horses were being housed at a nearby acreage in the 31600 block of Velvet Avenue.
