Alice, the youngest of six daughters of John H. and Mary (Hoffman) Renze, was born on Jan. 16, 1928. She grew up near Roselle and attended Holy Angels Catholic School in Roselle. After her formal education Alice worked at Lehman Drug Store and Soda Fountain and Woolworth’s Department Store, both in Carroll.
On Sept. 12, 1951, Alice married Leo Staiert at Holy Angels Catholic Church in Roselle. The couple farmed for 50 years in the Lytton and Roselle areas. Alice always raised a big garden and canned and froze many vegetables, fruits, and jellies. In 2001 the couple retired from the farm and moved to their present home in Carroll.
In retirement Alice continued to work for New Hope Village in Carroll where she made many longtime friendships. She volunteered with the St. Anthony Regional Hospital Auxiliary and the Carroll County Historical Society.
In her spare time she made rosaries for missionaries, family and friends, and repaired many “well loved” rosaries. Alice enjoyed baking, especially sweet treats to share with family and friends. She was a longtime member of Holy Angels Parish in Roselle, a member of St. Lawrence Church-St. John Paul II Parish in Carroll, and she was a member of the choir at both parishes.
Alice is survived by her children: Pam (Leonard) Daniel of Carroll, Joyce (Greg) Brincks of Carroll, Patrick Staiert of Carroll, and John (Vickie) Staiert of Sioux City; 10 grandchildren: Mike (Jill) Daniel, Amy (Dorin) Abrisz, Lenny (Rhonda) Daniel, Nick (Erin) Daniel, Tammy Daniel (Chris Ross), Beth (Mike) Klocke, Erin (Brandon) Eischeid, Stacie (Dave) Pepin, Allison (Ben) Taylor, and Andy (Leann) Staiert; 20 great-grandchildren with one on the way; her sisters-in-law: Ethel Reiff of Carroll, Alice Staiert of Carroll, Ella Mae Staiert of Harlan, and Harriet Staiert of Colorado; as well as many nieces, nephews and other extended family.
