David Alan Darling was born Nov. 23, 1940, in Carroll, Iowa, to Gerald Elmer and Velma Ione (Moore) Darling. Dave suffered a stroke about two weeks before passing away at age 81 at Mercy One Hospital in Des Moines, Iowa, on Saturday, Nov. 19, 2022.

While in elementary school Dave walked to his grandparents’ home across the road for lunch where he received a great home-cooked meal by his grandmother. His dad, Gerald, worked nights at the train depot while his mother worked at the local newspaper as a proofreader and typesetter. Dave worked along with his dad at the Depot watching anywhere from model homes to cars to you name it being shipped through by freight. Dave was a “lifetime railroader” taking many trips over his life.

After graduating from Kuemper Catholic High School in Carroll, Dave attended the University of Northern Iowa and graduated with honors in 1963 with a bachelor of arts degree in mathematics and a minor in chemistry. He was a member of Kappa Delta Pi Education Honorary Society. Dave completed 53 semester hours of graduate work in mathematics, computer science and adult education at Iowa State, Drake and Colorado State Universities from 1965-1975.

He taught high school mathematics and chemistry classes from 1963 until 1970 in central Iowa public schools. Later he was at Roosevelt and Lincoln High Schools, the American Institute of Business, and the Des Moines Area Community College Urban Campus, all in Des Moines, Iowa, teaching computer programming and developing a student payroll system for the administration.

Dave made many friends along the way and kept in touch with the ones that moved away. He retired and spent a few winters in Phoenix, Arizona. Dave lived in Leon, Iowa, with a longtime friend and caregiver, Don Jones, and Gracie, their Dachshund, before his health worsened and he moved into University Park Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Des Moines.

Dave is survived by his family and friends, including Don Jones, friend of 47 years.

A graveside service and burial will be in the Carroll Cemetery in Carroll on at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 29. Arrangements were through the Slade-O’Donnell Funeral Home in Leon.
