Esther Mary Pieper was born on May 17, 1927, to Nicolas and Hilda (Van Erdewyk) Loew in Lidderdale, Iowa. She was baptized and confirmed in the Catholic faith. Esther graduated from St. Ann Catholic School in Vail, Iowa.

On Nov. 21, 1949, Esther married Charlie Pieper at St. Ann Parish. To this union, six children were born: Joyce, Dick, Jerry, Larry, Kevin and Cheryl. They made their home on a family farm west of Vail.

After graduation, she taught country school in the Vail area. Later, she worked at Marvin’s Provisions before becoming a cook at the Ar-We-Va Community School for over 25 years.

She enjoyed cooking, baking and her many puzzle books. She also had a strong knack for bowling and playing cards. She was especially known by her friends for her BBQ sauce and banana nut bread. Esther had a strong faith; she loved her family more than anything.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband: Charlie Pieper; great-granddaughter Talia Bruch; sisters Irma Zieman, Rita Powers and Ruth Powers; and daughter-in-law Betty Pieper.
