Esther Mary Pieper was born on May 17, 1927, to Nicolas and Hilda (Van Erdewyk) Loew in Lidderdale, Iowa. She was baptized and confirmed in the Catholic faith. Esther graduated from St. Ann Catholic School in Vail, Iowa.
On Nov. 21, 1949, Esther married Charlie Pieper at St. Ann Parish. To this union, six children were born: Joyce, Dick, Jerry, Larry, Kevin and Cheryl. They made their home on a family farm west of Vail.
After graduation, she taught country school in the Vail area. Later, she worked at Marvin’s Provisions before becoming a cook at the Ar-We-Va Community School for over 25 years.
She enjoyed cooking, baking and her many puzzle books. She also had a strong knack for bowling and playing cards. She was especially known by her friends for her BBQ sauce and banana nut bread. Esther had a strong faith; she loved her family more than anything.
Esther passed away peacefully with her family by her side on Friday, April 30, 2021, at St. Anthony Regional Hospital in Carroll, Iowa. She was 93.
Esther is survived by her children: Joyce and husband Kim Von Glan of Westside, Dick Pieper and wife Janice of Vail, Jerry Pieper and wife Diane of Panora, Iowa, Larry Pieper and wife Debra of Carroll, Kevin Pieper and wife Sheron of San Antonio, Texas, and Cheryl and husband Jeff Vetter of Arcadia; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; sisters Helen Hannasch, Betty Nepple and Phyllis Luft; brother: Robert Loew; other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband: Charlie Pieper; great-granddaughter Talia Bruch; sisters Irma Zieman, Rita Powers and Ruth Powers; and daughter-in-law Betty Pieper.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, May 3, at St. Ann Catholic Church in Vail. Father Paul Nguyen will serve as celebrant with interment at St. Ann Catholic Cemetery in Vail. Irene Feilmeier will be the organist. Honorary casket bearers will be Holly Larson, Lisa Leiting, Rachel Zediker, April Porter, Amanda Kraus, Emily Weller, Casey Bruch and Shelby Pieper. Casket bearers will be Aaron Pieper, Clint Von Glan, Adam Pieper, Nick Von Glan, Jon Vetter, Cory Pieper and Dylan Vetter.
