Marie Burns, 101, of Manning, Iowa, passed away on Monday, Nov. 11, 2019, at Manning Senior Living.
Mass of the Christian Burial was held Saturday, Nov. 23, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Manning. Celebrant was the Rev. Paul Nguyen, and concelebrant was the Rev. Andrew Hoffman. Mass servers were Mabel, Ben and Ella Langel. Lector was Laurie Stein. Eucharistic minister was Jim Muhlbauer. Music was by the Sacred Heart Choir and organist Pat Heithoff. Casket bearers were Glenn Neuerburg, John Neuerburg, Jim Neuerburg, Steve Wiskus, Louie Balukoff and Marty Balukoff. Honorary casket bearers were Elmer Langel and Marie’s nieces and nephews. Interment was at Sacred Heart Cemetery in Manning.
Ohde Funeral Home in Manning was in charge of arrangements.
Marie JoAnn, daughter of James and Marie (Petroff) Balukoff, was born Jan. 18, 1918, of Bulgarian heritage, on a farm near Roselle in Carroll County, Iowa.
Marie grew up in Carroll County and attended country schools near Roselle, Willey and Dedham. When Marie completed her schooling, she worked on the family farm and was a hired girl who helped other farm families with attending to children and household duties.
On Nov. 19, 1941, she and Raymond J. Burns were married at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Dedham by the Rev. Henry Pick. They lived in the railroad depot in Dedham, and Marie was a homemaker.
In 1958, they moved to Manning where her husband worked at the Milwaukee Depot. They lived in several homes in Manning over the years. Marie first worked at Priebe and Sons Hatchery candling eggs. She then worked for LR Nelson from 1963 until 1976, when she retired. Raymond died Aug. 22, 1984.
Marie continued to live in their home until June of 2016, when she became a resident of Manning Senior Living.
Marie was a faithful member of Sacred Heart Church Parish in Manning, as well as the Catholic Daughters of the Americas and the Altar and Rosary Society. In her spare time, she enjoyed tending flowers. Marie decorated the church and altar with beautiful flowers for over 40 years. She also enjoyed vegetable gardening, canning much of her produce, as well as, going to card club, sewing and playing bingo.
Marie is survived by sister-in-law Marilyn Burns of Jamaica, many nieces and nephews, other relatives and many friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond Burns; parents; brothers: John (Dolores) Balukoff, Pete (Hilda) Balukoff, Tony (Josephine) Balukoff and Louis (Beverly) Balukoff; sisters: Ann (George) Neuerburg, Mathilda (Wayne) Shutt and Stella (Robert) Jacobs; and brothers-in-law Russell (Gladys) Burns and Gene Burns.
