Sandra Kay “Sandie” Gonnerman, 66, passed away on Saturday, Nov. 27, 2021.

Sandie was born on March 11, 1955, in Carroll, Iowa, to Gaylord and Arlene Stangl. She graduated from Kuemper Catholic High School and Briar Cliff College in 1977. She received her master’s degree in accounting from the University of South Dakota. She worked for Postal Finance in Sioux City, Iowa, where she met Rodney. They married Aug. 11, 1979, in Dedham, Iowa. They lived and worked in Sioux City until 1988 when they relocated to Lincoln, Nebraska. She then worked as an accountant for Catholic Social Services for 26 years. Sandie and Rod raised six children: Katherine Anne, Laura Leigh, Cheryl Lynn, Matthew Charles, Daniel Stephen and Stephanie Mae.

Sandie’s first love was playing softball, and then she and Rod loved golfing together. Golf was her passion, but family was her life. She could peel potatoes like the Flash, mend a boo-boo or a Barbie dress, change a diaper and do three baths all at once or so it seemed. The Energizer Bunny would have quit. She could crochet, cross-stich, run a hand-me-down sewing machine and turn nothing into the greatest costumes for Halloween and Christmas ever. She knew more than Santa and always what was needed and good. She never forgot anyone’s birthday or anniversary. She mastered not doing it alone, prayer was her secret power. St. Anthony was always busy. Clothes were always clean and folded and socks were matched and tucked. Towels wore out but not her.

Her children were raised with love and care. They danced and sang, played and squabbled, but Sandie was always there to make peace and mend feelings. A good walk to the park fixed everything. Her gifts, on loan from God, were not wasted as she applied them all with prayer, love and compassion to her 14 grandchildren. Of course, they got more candy and wonderful desserts than her children remember. Sandie’s entire life was devoted in service to others.

Sandie is survived by her husband: Rodney Gonnerman; mother: Arlene Stangl; brothers Royce Stangl and Craig (Jill) Stangl; sisters Peggy (Martin) de Tazanos Pinto, Linda (Joe) Byrum and Leann (Dan) McElroy; brothers-in-law: James Darby and LeRoy Schlichte; daughters: Katherine (Nathan) Schmitz, Laura (Mark) Holmes and Cheryl Gonnerman; sons: Matthew (Emily) Gonnerman and Daniel (Laura) Gonnerman; youngest daughter: Stephanie Gonnerman; and 14 grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her father: Gaylord Stangl; and sisters Gail (Jim) Darby, Faye (Dave) Seidl and Julie (LeRoy) Schlichte.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 3, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 1940 S. 77th St., Lincoln.

Rosary will be prayed at 7 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 2, at Butherus, Maser & Love Funeral Home, 4040 A St. Lincoln.

Memorials may be made to St. Vincent DePaul Society.
