Tom was born on Sept. 4, 1963, in Carroll, and was a son of John and Karen (Rettenmaier) Scharfenkamp. He grew up on his family’s farm near Lidderdale and graduated from Kuemper Catholic High School in 1981. Tom became a cattle feeder immediately after high school and continued his very successful operation, with his longtime hired man Brian Daniel and his son Tanner, up until the time of his death.
He married Teri Pietig on Nov. 9, 1991, at Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Carroll. The couple made their home in Carroll where they raised their two children. Tom was a cattle feeder at heart. He loved the land, planting and caring for trees, and most of all spending time with his family. He loved Friday night gravel travel with his wife, and he was very proud of the new home they recently built.
