Crusader girls knock off previously unbeaten Woodbine

  • 0

It’s one thing to hand a team their first loss on the season. It is quite another to do it on the road, less than two weeks after being bested by the same team less than two weeks prior.

Friday night the Coon Rapids-Bayard girls basketball team was able to stretch their  current winning streak to three-straight with a somewhat improbable victory over previously unbeaten and No. 6 ranked Woodbine.

The win 46-45 win over Woodbine came a little less than two weeks after Woodbine had been able to gain a 51-42 victory over Coon Rapids-Bayard in Coon Rapids on Jan. 9.

In Friday’s game things didn’t start off great for the Crusaders as they trailed 27-19 at halftime and were down four points going into the fourth quarter.

Throughout the fourth quarter the Crusader girls were able to control their emotions and fight back to get back into the contest.

After tying up the game several times during the first half of the fourth quarter the Crusaders were never quite able to extend their lead to a comfortable level.

Near the end of the game the Tigers were able to hold a two-point lead over the Crusaders, but freshman Aubrey Hofbauer was able to end up with the ball as the final seconds ticked off the clock.

Instead of attempting a tying shot, Hofbauer sunk a three pointer to give the Crusaders a win over Woodbine.

Freshmen seemed to lead the way for the Crusaders. Malia Clayburg led CR-B in points with 16. Both Anna Hart (freshman) and Breeley Blayburg (junior) scored nine points each. Aubrey and Lydia Hofbauer both scored six points each.

The Crusaders stand at 8-5 this year.
