Knights go undefeated at SCC tournament

  • 0

Not only did the Kuemper Catholic volleyball team win all five of their matches on Saturday, they didn’t drop a set.

Although the Knights went undefeated in the SCC tournament, it doesn’t mean they weren’t challenged.

In one of their first matches the Knights played Ridge View, and although they were able to win the match 2-0, the first set was a heart stopper.

Ridge View seemed to challenge Kuemper on every point. Both teams were able to tie each other at 21 points, which is the usual stopping point for the tournament sets. However both teams had to battle until a team was able to win by two.

The Knights and Raptors would trade points until the Knights were finally able to gain a 28-26 win over the feisty Raptors.

The Knights battled back and won the second set 21-11 to gain the match win.

Their next match, against Hawkeye 10 foe Harlan, wasn’t nearly as challenging. The Knights were able to gain a first set win 21-14. They won the second set 21-15 to move to 2-0 on the day.

In the third match Kuemper squared off against East Sac County. There the Knights were able to gain the first set win 21-18. They finished the sweep with a 21-17 win in the second set.

Kuemper was challenged a little by Kingsley-Pierson. In the first set the Knights won 21-13. The second set was a 21-17 win over the Panthers.

The Knights concluded the tournament with a 21-16, and 21-13 sweep over South Central Calhoun.

Frannie Glynn led the Knights with 24 total kills in the match. She added five digs, four blocks and six aces.

Kenzie Schon added 21 kills, two assists, eight digs and two aces.

Sophie Badding had 22 kills with six blocks and four digs.

Kamryn Venner had 19 kills, 12 digs and a pair of blocks on Saturday.

Kaci Peter added 18 kills, nine digs, five aces and two blocks in the tournament.

East Sac finished with three wins and two losses in the tournament.

The Raiders were able to gain a 2-0 win over South Central Calhoun 21-19, 21-17.

The Raiders later won 2-1 over Kingsley-Pierson. The Raiders were able to win the first set 21-14, but K-P answered with a 26-24 second set win. In the third set East Sac won 15-13.

Against Harlan the Raiders won 2-0 with a pair of 21-18 sets.

Ridge View was able to blank East Sac in the match with a pair of 21-15 wins.

Throughout Saturday the Raiders were led by Kate Vondrak who had 26 kills, 10 digs, 10 blocks and two aces. Olivia Grote added 16 kills, 13 digs, three blocks and an assist.

South Central Calhoun finished the tournament 0-5. They fell to Kingsley-Pierson 21-13, 21-11. Against Ridge View the Titans fell 2-1: 14-21, 21-19, 15-5. SCC fell to Harlan 2-0: 28-26, 21-16.
