Going into the match against North Polk last Thursday the Tigers knew they were in for a tough battle.
North Polk was this year’s Raccoon River Conference champion, and in the prior matches against the Comets this season the Tigers had failed to win a set.
However, Carroll wanted to use those facts to help them gain an upset in the class 4A regional semifinal Thursday night.
Although the Tigers and Comets would be locked in a long three set battle, North Polk was able to walk away with a 3-0 win, advancing the Comets into the regional final match.
At first the Tigers seemed to come out strong as they and North Polk traded points right away in the opening rounds of the first set.
Both teams were able to get their attack going, but the Comets were able to use their attack just a little but more. Soon the Comets took a lead and started to pull away.
At first they were able to take a 10-point lead, but that soon ballooned to 15 points.
Carroll battled back at the end of the set, but North Polk held on for a 25-11 win.
North Poik might have put a little too much stock into what happened in the first set.
Carroll came back and were able to use their attack to poke several holes in the North Polk defense.
This time the early ties never seemed to subside as they had throughout the first set.
North Polk’s lead ebbed and flowed between five and eight points.
The Tigers continued to battle throughout the second set, but North Polk was able to gain a narrow 25-20 win to move to 2-0 in the match.
Carroll and North Polk were able to battle each other in the opening part of the set, but soon North Polk took a 24-11 lead in the set.
Carroll, facing the end of their season, was able to get their offense working once again.
For three straight points the Tigers were able to fend off the end of their season. However a long attack by Carroll sent North Polk into the regional final.
The Tigers were led by Shay Sinnard with seven kills. Olivia Rowedder and Madison Thornock both had four kills each. Katelyn Aden, Shayne Aschinger can Camryn Schable all had two kills each.
Riley Nagl had eight assists. Kaitlyn Tigges ahd seven and Madison Tunning had one.
Sinnard had 18 digs, Tunning had 11 digs, Nagl had 10 digs. Ava Gross and Madison Thornock both had four digs each. Tigges and Aden both had three digs. Rowedder finished with two digs. Schable and Sander both had one dig each.
Aden finished the match with three blocks. Rowedder, Thornock and Schable both added one block each.
Tunning, Nagl and Thornock all finished with one ace in the match.
Carroll’s season ends with a 10-23 overall record.
There were nine seniors listed on the roster.
