Whenever the Titans needed to form a rally, they seemed to gain the right pass at the right time.
That helped South Central Calhoun earn a 3-0 win over IKM-Manning in the first round of the regional volleyball tournament on Monday. It didn’t hurt that the Titans were playing at home either.
In all three sets on Monday night the Titans were able to start with the lead. Once they had the lead thy didn’t seem to want to let go of it.
A lot of that was because of what the game plan was for the Titans coming into the match.
“Coming in we wanted to win in three if we could,” said South Central Calhoun head coach Shelly Blankenship. “Before each game we always come up with different goals for the game we’re about to play in. A big one for us tonight was to always try and get the first and last point.”
In almost every set the Titans were able to get both the first and last point. The lone exception was the first set when IKM-Manning won the very first point in the match. From there the Titans would go on the attack winning seven of the next eight points to establish a lead.
IKM-Manning wouldn’t give up, breaking up the South Central Calhoun runs at times, but SCC’s attack came from all sides of the floor, and that allowed the Titans to earn a 25-13 first set win.
“One thing that we’ve been practicing is trying to run different plays so we don’t have the same hitter hitting all of the time,” Blankenship said. “We want to move the ball around, and our hitters have gotten really good at using the different passes. All of our hitters have been able to grow so much out of that because they are talking with each other. They all feel comfortable where the attack is going to come from.”
The attack worked in the second set as the Titans went on a 5-0 run and then followed that with an 8-0 run to earn a second set 25-13 victory.
IKM-Manning sensed that their season could be ending so they fought throughout the third set, including a four-point run near the end of the set, but overall it was SCC that was able to earn the 25-16 win. That advanced the Titans in the tournament where they played Clarion-Goldfield-Dows on Thursday night. Results were not available at press time.
Emma McKinney led SCC with eight kills on Monday. Riley Batta and Haley Stauter both had five kills each. Batta finished with 18 assists, while Emma Geno led her team with eight digs.
IKM-Manning was led in kills by Sierra Ferry with three. Bianca Cadwell had five assists. Miranda Benton added three.
