Thursday was a big day for the Glidden-Ralston volleyball team.
In the afternoon the Wildcats were able to earn their first ranking of the season by the IGHSAU, coming in as the No. 15 best team in class 1A competition.
Thursday night the Wildcats were able to wrap up sole possession of the Rolling Valley Conference championship when they swept Exira-Elk Horn-Kimballton in three straight sets.
The first set was an easy win as the Wildcats were able to pull off a lopsided 25-6 win.
The Spartans would make the Wildcats work for the next two sets though.
Over the battle that would ensue for the next two sets.
During that time the Wildcats had to rely on their front line to out hit the Spartans who weren’t afraid to bring their offensive hitting power to the net as well.
While E-EH-K kept matching the pace of the Wildcats in the match, it was junior Gretchen Wallace who led the attack for the Wildcats, finishing with 12 kills on the night.
Senior Talia Schon kept the Spartans on their toes as she added eight kills, making it so the Spartans couldn’t focus on shutting down one hitter.
Another senior, Hannah Whitver was able to add eight kills.
The strategy worked as the Wildcats were able to win the second and third sets 25-23 each, and get their first outright conference championship since 2015.
Dishing out the kills was setter Kim Daily who had 28 assists. Schon added two. Schon was also a star in serving as she collected four of the team’s eight aces. Tori Grossman added two more aces.
